Joe Barton, United States Congressman, Sixth District of Texas.
Revisiting the 1996 Telecommunications Act:
Possible Legislative Action to Encourage Investment in Technology

In 2004, Congressman Barton was selected by his colleagues to be Chairman of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, the oldest standing United States House of Representatives legislative committee. This influential committee has primary legislative jurisdiction over a broad array of telecommunications matters including the deployment of advanced services, VoIP, cable television programming, wireless technologies, and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

Mr. Barton's talk on "Revisiting the 1996 Telecommunications Act: Possible Legislative Action to Encourage Investment in Technology" is particularly appropriate. As the committee Chair, Congressman Barton will lead the Energy and Commerce Committee’s development of potentially landmark legislation that could significantly change the 1996 Act and the telecommunications marketplace. He will discuss how changes in U.S. policy and federal regulations could address evolving telecom, Internet and data networking technologies, markets and applications domestically and globally to ensure that regulatory policies encourage investment in new technologies.

This event is included with Full conference registration.
Tickets can be purchased for $100 per person for other registration categories and Accompanying Guests.

The US monetary system is one American dollar $1.00 = 100 cents. Traveler's checks denominated in US dollars are accepted at most hotels, restaurants, and large stores. There are two ATMs located in the Hyatt. Most ATMs accept major bankcards from banks that are part of such international banking networks as Cirrus and Plus, and credit cards (if you obtain a PIN prior to travel). ATMs dispense US currency at the going rate of exchange. However, do not rely on just one debit or credit card to obtain cash.

Business casual is recommended for daytime and evening GLOBECOM 2004 events.

The US uses 110-120 volts, 60 cycles, compared to 220-240 volts, 50 cycles, in most of Europe.

This is part of the American way of life, based on the principle that you should pay for any special service. Here are some examples: bartenders: 10%-15%; bellhops: at least $2 per bag or $5-$8 for a lot of baggage; taxi drivers: 15% of the fare; airport attendants, $1 per bag or $2-$3 for a lot of baggage; valet parking attendants: $2.

Taxicabs - Within the city, taxis cruise the streets looking for passengers. There is a taxi stand at the hotel. Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) offers both a light rail system and buses. There is a DART station connected to the Hyatt Regency Dallas in Union Station. DART does not offer service to and from the airport.
